First priority: the material! Yoga is part of a healthy process that respects both your body and the planet. Yes, because as you already know, everything's connected. That's why my first tip is to choose a natural material (rubber, jute, cork...) and avoid toxic PVC-type materials! BOOOOOOO!
Avoid slippery materials. Instead, choose materials that stick to the ground and to your body. Because slipping and breaking a wrist is anything but Yogi! Hahaha!
The rule is: the thicker your mat, the less stability you'll have. In the end, it all depends on the yoga type you are practicing, but for all dynamic yoga, including yoga dance, it's best to use a thinner mat, to ensure good balance. A standard yoga mat is 4mm thick.
I personally like it when I can stretch along the length of my mat without sticking out. I like to be able to keep my hands and feet on it in every pose. So it all depends on your size, but always take one that's bigger than you are!
To summarize
A material that respects your body and the planet, the right thickness for your yoga style, and the right length for your comfort. All of these criteria will help you choose the right mat to meet your needs. And if it doesn't take off (let's be realistic), you don't need a genie to make your spirit fly and join Aladdin in a whole new world.. All you need is a good yoga session along with a great mat! 😉
